For QuickTime 6.5.2 or earlier

Open QuickTime Player.
Go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences.
In the first drop down box, select Sound Out.
Under Choose a device for play back: choose WaveOut (if you have more than one WaveOut choose Windows preferred device or you’re sound card.

For QuickTime 7.0 or later

Open QuickTime Player.
Go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences.
Click on the Audio Tab. Put a check next to Safe Mode (waveOut only).
